Sponsored Review : Daessiksin Korean BBQ Buffet

Happy December and nice weather is always a good time to not just stay at home, it is also time to gather some friends and have some Korean BBQ!

Daessiksin Korean BBQ Buffet

Thanks to Daessiksin, I managed to catch up with my old friends like HP and Ck, not so old friend Jon and new friend, Yuki! We were at the West Mall outlet to avoid the crowd but the Korean BBQ Buffet is also available at Bugis Plus, Orchard Gateway, Serangoon NEX, Waterway Point, Causeway Point, AMK Hub, and will be available at United Square and Cathay Cineleisure before Christmas 2016.

Even though we were there to avoid the human traffic, the buffet restaurant was still packed and doing well for a late Monday evening.

Jon and I took a little for each side, making sure that we would not miss out to try any of the side dishes and also have a nice flatlay picture hehe but seriously just look at the spread! Jon's favourite is the glass noodles. ( I saw him take two servings!)

And that cheese! (First one is complimentary, top up serving $3++ each)

What I really loveeeeee about the place was the grill pan that the restaurant uses, together with the well formulated marination recipes, the grilled food were done quickly, able to retain the meat's moisture, not too oily nor dry. Even when you accidentally over cook and burn the meat, just wet a tissue and it will be removed easily from the pan and affect the new food you put on top of the grill!

pro tip : Leave your cooked meat at the sides of the grill pan to slow down its cooking.

And of course eating creatively!
Come on, let's move on from the put-your-meat-inside-a-lettuce-and-add-some-kimchi-wrap-and-eat, to just add more stuff! Like what we did below, a piece of meat, lettuce, corn, cherry tomato.

We did do much fun food experiment the other day at the restuarant. We had like pork belly paired with the in house Kimchi (talk about it later cause it was so good), or with the enokitake mushroom. Yumz in the tumz. I am not quite a fan over Kimchi but HP was sharing about how good the kimchi was, I had to try myself to see if he was masking ads (kiddingbro). The Kimchi was marinated with the head chef's recipe and it was moderate spicy, not overpowering, simply put - a very comfortable taste.

Add some carbs in, we try to add cooked Japanese rice to the grill and eat some meat and kimchi and CHEESEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Daessiksin Korean BBQ Buffet

Although it was a sponsored review, I would say that Daessikkin Korean BBQ way exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I went with a mindset that I would possibly be having normal-tasting dishes, and nothing fantastic. I was terribly wrong, I loved it so much I kinda wanna buy the grill pan home and the chicken bulgogi was soooooo good. The chicken meat itself have very little fats, with makes the cooking and eating experience a lot healthier and better. I don't take beef but I looked at the portion and it was huge. I can continue to rave about it but what is better to try it out yourself?

The nice people from MOF group has given me 30 Daessikkin dining vouchers and 20 dining vouchers from their sister brand Tensho to share with my readers!

All you need to do is :

1) Follow me "@yourapplepie" & "@mofgroup" on Instagram
2) Like my Daessikkin picture
3) Tell me via the comment box as to  who would you like to bring for your first meal Daessikkin/Tensho and why! (please indicate either)

Contest ends 3 December, so fastest fingers first! Good Luck!
p/s:  Remember to try the red bean soup before you are done with your meal.

Bangkok Jam

July is gone & here comes August !
I know I have not been updating this space so here I am with a really short post !
Been really really busy with work (working now also) and the thing is I also don't know I busy with what wtf.

Super sleepyhead face after work !
p/s: filler sponsors please !!!

Was supposed to be with Joyce for an event/foodtasting at Plaza Singapura but the PR fail, didn't contact her or do anything despite us waiting outside the restaurant/cafe for quite <s>some </s> long time.

Joyce was kinda not very happy about it so we went Bangkok Jam for dinner instead !

Heard so much about Bangkok Jam so we decided to give it a try.
Ice milk tea for each and we shared two dishes.
It was so long ago I can't even remember what we had.
The price was a little less affordable, I feel but food was good !

Happy Joyce is happy again !

A lesson learnt, if you can't be a good PR don't be one !
Truth hurts.

Sponsored Review : Cuisine Master Hotpot

Special thanks to Mint & Cuisine Master Hotpot for the special treat.

It was an eye opener when I had dinner over at Boat Quay on a Sunday evening.
When Mint asked Fenny and I for a hotpot dinner, my first impression the dinner was to be the ones like Peck Seah street, $20 with free flow cheap ingredients and warm.

I WAS UTTERLY WRONG WHEN I REACHED CUISINE MASTER HOTPOT.
The restaurant located along the Boat Quay takes up a shop house and outdoor seat for drinks.
Hotpot available on second and third level and I recommend to book in advance.

This was what was in front of my seat.
Fruits and some appetizers.

Cuisine Master hotpot focuses a lot of the art of eating and never did I know that hotpot can be of such standards as well. Okay lah, maybe I suaku ok.
Okay we start off with the fruits platter !
Hot tea in the tea cup and some shao xing wine in the jue wine vessel.
What is a jue wine vessel?

jue (Chinesepinyinjué) is a shape of Chinese ritual bronze, a tripod vessel or goblet used to serve or warm wine. It was used for ceremonial purposes by the Chinese of the XiaShang, and Zhou dynasties. Often the jué had a handle, sometimes in the shape of a dragon. It also has two protuberances on the top of the vessel, which were probably used when lifting the vessel out of heat.[1] As with other shapes, the surface may be decorated with taotie."
-Adapted from Wikipedia

It was my first time drinking shao xing wine and it was surprisingly light and I super love the wine smell.
We had it before the dinner because it was said to be good for health and best taken before a feast.
Appetizer Surprise
Left to right : Cherry tomatoes, bean veg and spiced peanuts.
I think all of us super love the cherry tomatoes we had so much of them. (we asked for more)
Another Chinese wine served warm for the dinner.

We had a modified version of the $78 set so some of the dishes are different from the normal.
Please ask the restaurant to advice the cost if you would like try out what we had.

As you can see from the picture, they offer two soup base.We had mushroom broth ( dark colored) and chicken broth (white color). Different ingredients are placed in the different soups from time to time and the best part is that diners don't have to do it yourself. The staff are well trained in handling the food and they make sure that they are cooked to perfection. This service has been included in the dining experience with no extra cost, however if you like to do it yourself you can as well, which is what I don't recommend. The hotpot set had nine servings and by the end of the meal I was already full.

p/s : it comes with a little surprise too !
Visit them and you will know.

Do you know ?

Do you know what it is best to drink the soup before you place all the ingredients in it ? It is less healthier in fact harmful for the body to drink the after-steamboat soup as it contains acid that came from the food. IKR we all think that the best tasting soup is at its last. Well, not all things are saved for the last.

Baby abalones, scallops, fish maw and erm escargot (?)

Seafood platter- Fresh Grouper & Prawns

Ba Chu & Morel Mushrooms.

Ba Chu & Morel Mushrooms are rare mushroom and not served in many Singapore restaurants. It was my first try and the taste of the mushrooms are a little different from the usual variety.

Ba Chu Mushrooms (巴楚菇)are grown in the wild and have high nutrition and medical value. The distribution area for the mushrooms are in Xin Jiang , China.
Morel Mushroom provides an antioxidants to protect healthy cells. Consumption of morel mushroom can also help improve liver function. It can be found in North America and are in season from April to June.
Lobster

Chef's special prepared Shrimps and Pork balls.
The staff cooked the food to the perfect timing that everything is at its best taste.  (Y)
Freshly sliced Chicken Meat
Well marinated and I believe they included shao xing wine in it.
Sliced Kurobuta Meat (pork)
Special Home- made noodles

The noodles consists of four colors and each are made from four different vegetables. What is in the picture is a smaller portion of the "Budda jump over wall" noodles. We added the special made in house chili sauce and it tasted even better.

The restaurant also serve home made noodles and they are available without the hotpot.
Vegetarian Noodles $16.80
Special Edition "Budda jump over the wall" Noodles $22.80

Ending the special dinner with a surprise mocktail !
p/s : No makeup because I didn't expect it to be so atas.

Cheers to our friendship and a great year ahead !

Level 1

If you are looking for a place to chill at Boat Quay, do remember that the Cuisine Master Hotpot has a bar that serve drinks. Located in the middle of the stretch, the view is definitely not disappointing.

Sponsored Review : Onaka Restaurant & Wine Bar

Having dinner over at Onaka Restaurant was one of the privileges I had earlier this month. The restaurant located at a stone thrown distance away from the Labrador Park MRT Station serves a specialty of Conscious Cuisine, merging the tastes of Asian culinary cultures together with the modern Western. The restaurant's name ONAKA represents Optimum Nutrition And Kitchen Arts. Using only wholesome and selective organic ingredients, the restaurant's passion is to nurture their diners with the best, nutritionally balanced and delicious food.

When dining with ONAKA, one does not have to worry the handling of the ingredients and the calories. They promote Low Glycemic food and only use whole grain.
Let's start the nutritious gastronomic feast !

Shooters and dips

Asian hummus ($10)

Bread Basket (available upon advance request)

Omega Soy Smoothies ($10)
Mango x Banana X Organic Vanilla Soymilk with cinnamon and chia seeds.
For all you girls who refused to eat.

Cold Appetizers

Watermelon Sashimi ($8)

Is this watermelon or sashimi?
This is watermelon made into a sashimi. It taste a little like fish and it is safe to eat for people who can't take watermelon (me la k) Also, the best vegan sashimi I ever tried. Recommending to all vegetarian friends. The watermelon sashimi comes with a dipping sauce that Fen & I loved. ( Fen dip it in every possible thing she could for the dinner) The sauce tasted like sesame dressing in Japanese wafu sauce, very appetizing.
Tofu Avo($14)

Apart from the greens, the salad consist of tofu, avocado and walnuts accompanied by a light tasted dressing.

Hot Appetizer

Mushroom tea ($8)

Flavourful mushrooms topped with Natto miso. It taste salty at first but overall the tea was light. Had a slice of ginger in it and I felt that I had the best slice of ginger in my life. Never knew ginger can taste so good.

Noodles and Grains

The mains were so good I could not decide which is my favourite !

Roasted Mushroom Soba ($16)

Instead of the usual cold soba, the soba is paired with the flavorful mushrooms, topped with seaweed. Definitely a new taste from the usual soba served in Japanese Restaurants.

Organic Pineapple Fried Rice with Quinoa ($16)

Not the usual pineapple fried rice we all love, as the chef replaced the normal rice with organic brown rice.
Hot and Sour Prawns Rice Noodles ($18)

The rice noodles used was a very new experience. It has the QQ taste and the soup tasted a little like penang asam laska + BBQ Stingay to me. Not to mention that the queen prawns were well cooked as well.

Meat & Seafood

Duck pancake ($24)

The duck pancake is my favourite among the four as the duck confit is made to perfection. Together with the thin pancake and honey, it brings out the sweetness of the duck confit. 超好吃的。
Pear & Salmon ($20)

The pear & salmon is inspired to be eaten like the Korean bibimbap therefore the tragedy in the second picture. Quite cool I must say.

Pumpkin Seabass ($22)

Roasted pumpkin seeds crusted sea bass, haricot vert salad, smoked tomato puree

48 Hr beef

Sweets

Avo Choco Emotion with Cocao 7 Chocolate ($12)

I love the adorable chocolate dinosaur !
When avocado mousse meets chocolate mousse, have you tried this combination before ?
However, I'm afraid it is a little too sweet for my liking.

My say:

I would recommend this place and would re-visit again of course. The dishes served were suitable for different group of diners. I would bring my vegetarian friends along without to worry that they have nothing to eat and also my horrified on diet girls where they can know that dieting ALSO CAN have yummy food. And last but not least, my Muslim friends ( if they don't mind) as the restaurant serves no pork no lard. The prices are slightly higher than normal chain restaurants  but given the fact that ONAKA offers a more nutritious and creative cuisine, I think the prices are worth it. Can't wait for my next visit !
